👋 I’m an interdisciplinary designer newly based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I recently received my Master of Science in Human-centered Design and Engineering at the University of Washington. For my final capstone project, I applied speculative design strategies and a more-than-human-centered approach to create embodied rituals that sought to deepen our relationship with the natural world. In the not-so-distant past, I contributed to projects ranging from brand identity to mobile app designs at Microsoft, RGA, and Collins.

As a generalist, I feel most fulfilled when I apply my skills and knowledge to a wide variety of mediums and problem spaces. I’m equally at home designing a logo as I am architecting the operational process of a design team. Curiosity and observation are central to my design process. While design standardization has its place in promoting efficiency, I am committed to developing processes and solutions that are localized, authentic, and restorative. Outside the studio, I enjoy sun bathing during long morning walks (I’m a born and raised Angeleno!), cooking meals for friends, and practicing the skills required to manifest my vision of an urban homestead, where I grow and make most of the things my family needs.

If any of this piques your interest, I’m happy to hear from you: hey@lookatminah.com

	Design system

Design process
	Microsoft Family Design System
A robust and scalable design system for creating Family experiences that are consistent across all platforms

ChallengeSince the start of the Microsoft Family Safety initiative, the design system work stream was every designer’s neglected side project. Resourcing contraints and leadership pressure led to the prioritization of product feature work above all else, and all “non-urgent” efforts that didn’t directly contribute to our short-term goals were defunded. With contribution to the component libraries sporadic and unstructured, our design system quickly became stale and ripe with errors. Over time, and unsurprisingly, those errors showed up in the product experience itself. With both designers and engineers complaining about the inconsistencies in our designs and inefficiencies in our workflow, a small group of us petitioned product leadership to provide resources to address this design and engineering debt before the situation became more unmanageable. As the size of our team grew to meet the increased demands of our project, it was imperative for us to set up our design system and process in a way that could gracefully accommodate this scale while still maintaining parity with our parent system, Fluent.

Solution

The first action item after the design system project was funded was to designate design and engineering ownership (members are listed in the adjacent column). Together, we did the following:

Structured our project by clarifying our goals and success metricsSurveyed the damage that had accumulated over time in our component libraries both in Figma and in code, and prioritized the changes we needed to make in order of importanceCreated a project roadmap and a rhythm of collaboration and progressBuilt an intentional and sustainable governance model that enabled everyone on the product team to learn and contribute meaningfully to the design system while maintaining quality control
Our goals for the project was a design language, helpful guidelines, and a system of reusable components that would increase our design and development velocity and reduce our time spent reinventing the wheel on solutions.

	Brand strategyBrand identity

	Microsoft Family Brand Expression
A visual identity that is both distinctive and familiar, heralding Microsoft’s entry into a new era of consumer relevance.

	Challenge

In the spring of 2019, under the banner of Microsoft’s new consumer initiative, a multidisciplinary team of designers, product managers, engineers, data scientists and researchers was assembled to reimagine and expand the company’s product offering for families. My colleague Chang-ling Wu and I spearheaded the effort to define the look, feel, and voice for Microsoft family experiences as the team prepared to scale the service across multiple platforms, starting with mobile.

SolutionWe saw this branding project as an opportunity to not just create a unique identity for Microsoft Family but also to set the precedent for how consumer experiences at Microsoft were designed and branded moving forward. Combining the desire for innovation with a need for ecosystem coherence, we expanded and brightened up the color palette, created more modern and dynamic layouts, softened the tone of voice, and infused motion into key moments of the experience. The solution we landed on struck a gratifying balance between the old and the new – nostalgic elements from Microsoft’s legacy blended together with the vitality and earnestness of its humanistic future.
This project also became an exemplar of cooperation across product, brand, and marketing – domains that have historically stayed stubbornly siloed at Microsoft. Our team designed a collaboration process that mended the seams between our stakeholders so that we could collectively work toward our shared goal of providing a consistent and delightful end-to-end experience for our customers.

App store
The Family Safety app is the first consumer-led mobile application to come out of Microsoft. As a net new product, it didn’t have a pre-existing customer base, so its presence on the app store was a first impression that was crucial to get right.
These confluence of factors created an ideal opportunity to establish and test a new visual and storytelling style – less transactional, more emotive – that improved our conversion rates and refreshed the way consumers feel about Microsoft and M365.iOS ︎︎︎

Product marketing landing pageOrganizational siloes at Microsoft have historically contributed to discrepancies in design assets between Product and Marketing, resulting in a disjointed user experience for our customers. For the launch of Family Safety, our team broke this generational curse by forming a close working relationship with our friends in Marketing and Brand in order to ensure that the way the product was described matched the way the product was experienced. The final design (image on right) was a result of this fruitful partnership and a step forward in balancing a maze of tight constraints and requirements.

	Family Safety Mobile App

Architecting a mobile framework that optimized usability and cross-feature engagement

Challenge
In the spring of 2019, a multidisciplinary team of designers, product managers, engineers, data scientists and researchers were assembled at Microsoft to build a mobile solution for families, based on the company’s new strategy to reclaim its presence in the consumer market. Together the team created the Microsoft Family Safety app (available on iOS and Android) – a digital and physical safety tool that provides families with peace of mind through features like screen time limits, content filtering, location tracking, and crash detection alerts.
Solution

I was one of four designers assigned to the Family Safety project when it was first conceptualized. During my tenure on the team, I had the great privilege of working on numerous facets of the mobile app (iOS and Android), ranging from product envisioning, information architecture, usability optimization, visual design, illustration, to feature work (one of which earned me a design patent).
As the project scope and team steadily grew over time, my responsibility gradually shifted from designing isolated features to designing frameworks, processes and app-wide information architecture. It was a more challenging role that included the responsibility of coordinating the efforts of individual feature teams (i.e screen time team, location team, drive safety team...etc.) in order to establish and maintain quality and consistency in the user experience. The images you will see on this page are flows and features I’ve both directly and indirectly contributed to. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need more information about my role on this project.

ChallengeTwo years after the launch of the Microsoft Family Safety mobile app, Microsoft Family as a service was being groomed for expansion, which included a native app on the Windows platform and a feature integration into adjacent M365 products. With the scope of our project rapidly expanding and the size of our team swelling to match it (the design team had grown from four designers to 22 and now spanned three continents and four time zones), it became increasingly clear that our existing team structure and work processes weren’t set up in a way to successfully meet the growing demands of our new business directives.
In the Fall of 2021, the head of design, March Rogers, appointed me and my colleague Kolby to come up with solutions that would address the key issues plaguing our design team and impacting our business: miscommunication, inconsistent design quality and output, and fragmented and inefficient workflow. Our goal was to implement solutions that would allow the design team to align more effectively together and with their PM and engineering partners to deliver consistent and high quality experiences across our apps.

SolutionTo demonstrate the effectiveness of our new process, we decided it was apropos to go meta and apply the human-centered design framework to the process of designing a design process. From research to ideation to execution, we adapted the steps of the popular design framework to fit the unique needs and structure of our team. We did this to ensure that we were generating solutions that addressed the actual pain points of our primary users, in this case, our designers. With strong support from Design, PM, and Engineering leadership as well as the receptive attitudes and critical feedback from our fellow design colleagues, Kolby and I were able to co-create solutions for tooling, planning, process, and collaboration led to drastic improvements in efficiency, alignment and product quality across the entire team.

Inspiring and guiding creators to build accessible and engaging products across all platforms and devices

Challenge
Fluent is a design language developed by Microsoft in 2017. It was a revamp of the previous language, coined “Metro”, which defined the style and interaction of software built for Windows 10 and Windows 11. While Metro’s principles emphasized typography and minimal graphics, Fluent, by contrast, focused on dimensionality – a strategy that points to the company’s vision for the future: user experiences that seamlessly flow from 2D (i.e. phone, tablets, and desktop) to 3D (i.e. virtual and mixed reality).
I was part of original team tasked with defining and codifying the language into a system of components, patterns, and guidelines. My specific role in this initiative was to translate Fluent’s principles into a compelling narrative and practical guidance. Our goal was to increase understanding of the Fluent design system from internal product teams as well as third party creators, and help them build beautiful, accessible and engaging user experiences.

SolutionConfronted with the challenge of synthesizing and concretizing a nascent design language into practical recommendations for developers, I leveraged the insights and technical expertise of my project partners and combined them with my visual design skills and obsession with simplicity. Instead of starting from scratch, we were constrained to build on top of existing site infrastructure. Changes we made to the guidelines included negotiating with stakeholders, collaborating with the developers to unlock new layout opportunities within the rigid constraints of the existing technological framework; improving the taxonomy to make the guidelines easier to navigate; simplifying the writing; and adding visuals and motion to enhance viewer engagement and understanding. The newly updated design and developer guidance was revealed at Microsoft Build 2019. CSAT scores for the updated site improved since launch.Fluent design guidelines ︎︎︎

	Equinox Digital Platform Redesign
Forging a cohesive identity that allowed members to seamlessly traverse between digital and physical

ChallengeEquinox is a luxury fitness company headquarted in New York City whose “clubs” are located in major cities across the United States and abroad. It caters to a customer base willing to pay premium for ultra-modern facilities, high-end services, and first-class trainers. Popularly known for its provocative advertising campaigns, Equinox isn’t shy about proclaiming its brand’s edginess and elitism.Equinox online, however, was anything but edgy or luxurious. Their digital platform was oddly fragmented into three standalone sites: one site for logged in members, one site for visitors and nonmembers, and one site for their public blog. Other than the Equinox logo, there were no other aesthetic or functional elements unifying the three types of experiences. Neither of the sites looked like they’ve been updated in decades. In 2014, Equinox approached R/GA to help them resolve the digital arm of their brand identity crisis. Our challenge was this: How can we align Equinox’ online presence with who they are and how they want others to see them?

SolutionWe started the project by consolidating the three disparate web platforms into one simplified and cohesive web experience for members and nonmembers alike. We clarified and enriched their visual identity and applied it consistently across their web and mobile platforms. The Equinox mobile app for members, which was threadbare in its features and functionality, got a much needed UX/UI makeover that elevated it to a quality level that matched customers’ experience in the physical gym. The improvements we made to the website and the mobile app include a simplified information architecture to aid navigability, a visual system overhaul, data visualizations to improve activity tracking, a playful discover feature to keep members engaged, and a brand new icon system representing every category of fitness class offered.

	Equinox Connected Cycling

Combining science, data and cycling to create an immersive and connected fitness experience

ChallengePleased with the work we did to redesign their web and mobile platforms, Equinox partnered with R/GA again to reimagine their indoor cycling experience. The colorful and verbose brief read: “Deliver an addictive, musically-inspired, science-based indoor cycling experience coached by the industry’s best instructors utilizing the most cutting-edge technology to motivate with measurable fitness benefits.”
From the brief, we identified four key objectives:
Tap into gaming ideologies to update the gym’s signature ride structureEmpower instructors by equipping them with real-time user dataGive riders an easy and meaningful way to measure their performanceImmerse riders in a “tribe” mentality by creating a strong digital community

Solution
Together with the team at Equinox we created the Pursuit, an immersive studio cycling offering that took data from studio bicycles and gave riders live visualizations of their riding performance during the session, forging a connection between the rider to their bike, instructor, and their physical environment. The Pursuit encompassed two experiences: Build, which focused on endurance and building strength; and Burn, which was a HIIT workout that maximized caloric burn.
I helped conceptualize many of the individual and partner games for each experience and contributed to the development of the data visualization system. I also worked with the team to establish the graphical interface for the Equinox Cycling experience, creating the screens for the instructor tablet view and the cyclist mobile view for Burn.

ChallengeR/GA designed its new office with the goal of bridging the gap between the digital realm and the physical space. In preparation for the company’s relocation, a few employees (myself included) were tapped to help envision many facets of the new connected office.

Solution

Inspired by the utilitarian focus of the Bauhaus and the clarity and order of Swiss design, the R/GA brand identity was defined by its aesthetic restraint, asymmetrical layout, modular grid, and love affair with Helvetica Neue. I carried this style and sensibility through to the different mediums of brand touchpoints: a welcome pamphlet for new visitors and clients, a digital control system powering each conference room, an art index showcasing then then-Chairman Bob Greenberg’s impressive collection scattered throughout the office, and wayfinding signage for effortlessly navigating through the physical space.
The process of designing R/GA’s new office was documented by Gary Hustwit in a film titled, Workplace.
